Celebrating Canada Day on the Track and on the Road

This long weekend will be an exciting one! I first plan on joining my friends from the West Van Run Crew to celebrate the Crew's birthday and then, the following day, go to the Universal Track Meet in Surrey, BC to race a 200m and 800m. I will then get a little patriotic ride on the Bear Creek Miniature train with the family to celebrate my country's birthday. What are your plans for Canada Day?

Why I love being Canadian

Fun fact about me, despite none of my parents being born in Canada, I am actually a third generation Canadian. That is one of the things I love most about Canada: how open it is as a country. It has been a haven to my grandmother when she had to move here with my mother who could not get a citizenship anywhere else at the time because she was of mixed origins. Eventually, both her and my grandmother were granted the Canadian citizenship. Because my mother went off to study in France, I was myself born and raised there, but when the desire grew in me to return to my "roots", it only take some paperwork for me to get the citizenship that allowed me to move to Canada.

It is in Canada that I first started running, thanks to the Canadian company Running Room's clinics. It is also in Canada that I was for the first time accepted by a track & field club, and then got to compete in a sport at the Provincial and then, thanks to some government support, at the National level, for the first time. I love how friendly and supportive people are in this country. I also love how, here, I can just call myself Canadian and am not made to feel less Canadian than others because of the colour of my skin. I started track and field a bit late, so it is unlikely I will be able to represent my country in an open-age competition, but I am really hoping to be able to represent it at an international Masters championships event. Nothing would make me more proud.
